Here we have a wonderful rarity – one of the first Gibson Les Paul Junior Sunburst models built, from 1954 when the Junior was introduced.
Intended as an entry level, student model, the Gibson Les Paul Junior Sunburst – the only finish it came in – was a bare-bones but high quality guitar with Tropical Mahogany for the body and neck, and Rosewood for the fingerboard; for most if not all of the Junior’s production run between 1954 and 1963 when it was discontinued, this meant Brazilian Rosewood. Position markers are simple Mother of Pearl dots. For hardware, strip mounted Kluson Deluxe tuners were installed at the head, with a stop bar bridge / tailpiece on the body. A single P-90 pickup runs through a single volume and tone control to a plastic plate-mounted output jack. The pickguard is a single layer black plastic and – that’s it!
Like many P-90 equipped guitars, the Gibson Les Paul Junior Sunburst has a fantastic tone – full and rich with plenty of character. They work very well for Country, Rockabilly, Jazz, and many Rock variants. Played through an amp with some gain, these are real rock machines.
This example dates to 1954, built at the Gibson Parsons Street factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It’s in overall good condition. The finish has wear that’s expected for a guitar that’s now 66 years old, with a number of dents, dings and scratches along with natural lacquer checking. Some parts have been replaced; the original tuners were replaced, then reproductions of the originals installed. The pots, knobs and jack plate, all key wear items, have been replaced. As well, this guitar has been professionally refretted, and there is very little wear to either the frets or the fingerboard.
This Gibson Les Paul Junior Sunburst is sold with a Calton lightweight molded flight case.
