The Gibson Les Paul Junior, introduced in 1954 as a single cutaway, single pickup slab body model was Gibson’s lowest price solidbody until the 1959 Melody Maker.
In 1958, the body design changed with a second rounded cutaway on the bass side and the neck was modified to match. This provides unrestricted access to the highest frets – in the 1930’s, that would have been a migrating banjo player’s ideal! The rest of the guitar is basically unchanged: 3-per side strip Kluson tuners with creme plastic buttons, a stop tailpiece as a bridge, a single P90 ‘Dogear’ treble pickup through volume and tone controls, and a faux-tortoise pickguard. The output jack is on the side of the guitar.
For materials, the Gibson Les Paul Jr uses a slab Mahogany body, with Mahogany for the neck and Rosewood for the fingerboard. Until the late 1960’s and on this 1959 model, ‘Rosewood’ really means ‘Brazilian Rosewood’.
In 1961 the body design changed once again to what we now know as the ‘SG’ style with double pointed cutaways. The name also changed to ‘SG Junior’ as the relationship between Gibson and Les Paul was terminated.
This Gibson Les Paul Junior dates to 1959 at the Gibson plant on Parsons Street, Kalamazoo, Michigan. It is in good playing condition, with no breaks or cracks. The 7th fret dot position marker is missing, but can easily be replaced. The original stop-bridge is in the case, and on the guitar a compensated aftermarket bridge is in place.
The finish is a very faded cherry, and the ‘Les Paul Junior’ headstock decal section is missing though the Gibson logo is intact and in good shape.
The guitar plays well, and is quite resonant. This is a very fun guitar to play!
A non-original hard shell case is included. As the Les Paul Jr was intended as an entry level or student model, the original cases were most often inexpensive, faux-reptile texture fibre or cardboard.
