Here is a beautiful rarity, a real treat – a Gibson Les Paul GoldTop from 1954, and not just with a gold top but fully gold finished! This was known as the ‘Double Gold’ finish.
This beautiful piece has clearly been used as intended over nearly seven decades, and the gold finish has worn where the player’s hands and clothing contacted it. The serial number is clearly visible. It in largely original condition, though the usual wear items have been replaced, including the control pots, output jack plate and at least some of the frets. The Kluson Deluxe tuners, stop bar bridge and pickups all appear original. Over time, the bridge pickup cover developed some cracks where it enters the pickup cavity and there’s a small section missing.
By 1954, many of the early quirks of the Les Paul had been worked out. The Gibson Les Paul GoldTop used the same carved Maple cap on Mahogany slab body construction, with Mahogany for the neck and Rosewood – at this point sourced from Central South America – for the fingerboard. The neck set had been increased to allow the use of the stop-bar bridge, replacing the original Trapeze bridge; soon, this bridge was itself replaced with the ABR-1 and stop tailpiece combination that is still in use today. The dual P-90 combination would be continued until the 1957 introduction of the new Humbucking pickup.
This 1954 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop still plays well, sounds great, and is structurally in good condition, with no breaks or headstock repairs.
Sold with the original brown Gibson hard shell case; the latches hinges and handle are all intact and working.
The price shown is in Canadian dollars.
