Drawing from the late 1950s double cutaway models, the Gibson Les Paul DC Standard features a heavily figured Maple cap on a Mahogany slab body, and Maple neck with bound, 24 fret Rosewood fingerboard and gold plated hardware.
The hardware on this example is gold plated, with Grover Roto-Matic tuners at the head and an ABR/Stop Tailpiece set on the body. The neck pickup is shifted slightly towards the bridge, compared to a single cutaway Les Paul, to accommodate the longer 24 fret fingerboard. A pair of humbucking pickups feed to a standard 3-way switch, from there to a single Volume and Tone control, and finally to a side-mounted output jack.
The 1958 to 1960 double cut versions, the Les Paul Special and Junior, had Mahogany slab bodies without carved caps. These models were priced lower and aimed at the student and semi professional player. In the mid 1970s, Hamer introduced a number of guitars clearly influenced by this body style, but with carved caps and sometimes semi-hollow bodies. PRS has also drawn heavily from the concept, and their success likely prompted Gibson to revisit the design. Perhaps oddly, in 2004 Gibson sued PRS over their single cut models, not the double cuts, alleging infringement on the Les Paul shape. This suit was initially successful but overturned in 2005 by the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.
This model has been built several times, notably 1998 to 1999, from 2001 to 2006 and was available in a limited edition during 2016. You can read more about the 2016 version at this link.
This Gibson Les Paul DC Standard dates to January 28 2005 and was built at the Nashville shop. It’s in overall good condition with just light wear. There is a small, sealed crack on the rear of the neck behind the truss rod adjuster cavity. This seems quite solid and not structural. Otherwise this guitar plays well and its lightweight and great fret access make it very comfortable to hold and play.
This Gibson Les Paul DC Standard is sold with its original hard shell case.
