Designed to express class and quality, the Gibson Les Paul Custom Ebony Black with gold plated appointments appeared in 1954 and has been top of the range since. From introduction until the single-cutaway Les Paul design was dropped in 1961, the Custom lacked the Maple cap the other carved-top models had and was all-Mahogany. When the design was re-introduced in 1968 and to the present day, that changed and the basic construction has been the same as for the other models. Some authentic 1954 reissue models have featured the original carved Mahogany top.
Here we’re looking at a Gibson Les Paul Custom Ebony dating to December 18, 1988 and built at the Nashville plant. It is in largely original condition but has had a headstock repair, a relatively common occurrence. The original pickups are in the case, and have been replaced with a Seymour Duncan APH-1 Alnico II Pro set. The finish and fret wear shows that this guitar has been used as intended, and there’s a moderate amount of wear and tarnish to the gold plating. Like other Les Pauls of the era, the body is Mahogany with a carved Maple cap, and the neck is Mahogany with a bound Ebony fingerboard and Mother of Pearl used for the block position markers and distinctive Custom headstock inlays. There is no weight relief, and this guitar weighs in at 10.4 pounds or 4.73kg. Fret wear is light to moderate and the frets could be re-crowned and polished, but the guitar does play cleanly as is.
The original Gibson molded hard shell case is included.
