Since its appearance in 1954, the Gibson Les Paul Custom has become a standard for class, elegance, playability and tone. Originally released in ‘Tuxedo’ dress – gloss black finish, white multi-layer binding and gold hardware – the Custom has over the years received sunburst, natural and other custom finishes. It has also had a variety of pickup configurations, from a P-90 and Alnico V ‘Staple Top’ to two or three humbuckers.
Here we’re looking at a two-pickup Gibson Les Paul Custom in black with gold hardware, dating to March 13, 1979 at Kalamazoo Michigan. It is in overall good condition, and is complete and original aside from the strap pins – Dunlop Strap-Locks have been added. As tends to happen over the years, the gold plating on the bridge, tailpiece and pickup covers has worn, but the plating on the Schaller-built, Gibson-branded tuners is in better shape. The nitrocellulose lacquer finish has some oxidization, light wear, and light buckle rash on the back as expected for a guitar of this age, and has visually aged in such a way that the binding looks gold instead of white. The frets are in good shape with very light wear.
During the 1950’s, the Gibson Les Paul Custom was built with a Mahogany body, and the carved cap was Mahogany, not Maple like the Gold-Top or Standard. When the design was revived in 1968, the Mahogany cap did not return and the Custom received the Maple cap. By 1969, the neck received a Volute behind the truss rod adjuster well, and the neck was built of three pieces of Maple, rather than Mahogany.
