Built as a limited edition during 2015, the Gibson L00 1930s Classic heads back to the early days of the American steel string guitar’s meteoric rise in popularity, as it displaced the banjo.
The Gibson L-00 was introduced in 1929 and built until 1946, though it made its first catalog appearance in 1932, and at the time sold for $25 new! It featured a Spruce top with Mahogany for the sides, back, body blocks and neck. Originally, the fingerboard was unbound and ‘ebonized’ – dyed black – and could have been any number of woods other than Rosewood, depending on availability and price. The bridge is a rectangular Rosewood model with drop-in saddle. The body was 14.74 inches wide with a black finish, and at its introduction only the top was bound; back binding started to appear in 1933. The headstock sports a stencilled Gibson ‘script’ logo in white lacquer. The neck has a pronounced V profile, and the fingerboard has dot position markers. Early models used a white pickguard, later removed until 1933 when the ‘FireStripe’ pickguard was added.
Here we’re looking at a Gibson L00 1930s Classic, a reproduction of a post-1933 model, built during 2015 at the Gibson Acoustic plant in Bozeman, Montana, under the eye of master luthier Ren Ferguson. It’s in very clean, good condition with only minor wear. It has a gloss black nitrocellulose finish in very good condition, and a lighter coloured 12 inch radius Indian Rosewood fingerboard – not ebonized!
There are a few subtle differences between these Limited Edition models and the originals. The most visible is the FireStripe pickguard covering part of the two-line rosette – the original pickguards did not extend that close to the soundhole.
This guitar plays very well, and definitely evokes the sound and feel of 1930’s instruments, but with the benefit of modern durability.
The original hard shell case is included.
