This Gibson L-00 dates to 1934, with the L-00 built from 1932 to 1945 as the lowest cost L model. There have been some reissues of 1930’s models offered in the last decade. And yes, the ’00’ is two zeros.
For being plain, the Gibson L-00 models are remarkably good sounding instruments with a very even representation throughout the tonal range. As with many Gibson models, the top is Spruce. The sides, back, neck, body blocks and linings are mahogany, and the bridge and unbound fingerboard are rosewood. At the time this example was built, the Spruce was Adirondack, and the Rosewood sourced from Brazil. The bracing is a scalloped X design, and the pickguard is the original faux tortoise layer. The neck has a full, pronounced V profile and an adjustable truss rod. The finish is sunburst – the only finish offered until 1941, when a natural finish top became available.
This Gibson L-00 example has had an amount of service over the years, including a replacement, larger bridge with small Maple sub-plate and some repaired back cracks with finish overspray. The neck appears to have been off and reset, so the neck angle is fine. As well, it’s been re-fretted with very little wear on the frets. It plays well and has the full, crisp sound these guitars are known for.
A newer black hard shell case is included.
