Brand: Gibson
Instrument Categories: Acoustic Steel String, Guitars, SOLD
First appearing in 2014 from Gibson Acoustic in Bozeman, Montana, the Gibson J29 sports many of the design features of the classic 1930’s J models but with Indian Rosewood for the sides and back. The top is solid Sitka Spruce, with solid Indian Rosewood for the sides, back, bridge and unbound fingerboard. The body blocks and neck are Mahogany. A compact pickguard is glued to the finish below the soundhole (as opposed to directly to the top). Tuners are Grover Roto-Matics with Nickel finish. The J-29 came stock with an L R Baggs Element pickup system. The finish is nitrocellulose lacquer, with the top receiving an ‘antique’ tint.
This model is classed as ‘short scale’ at 24.75 inches, but that’s the same as a J-45. Many steel string acoustics are longer scale, from 24.9 inches to 25.4 or 25.5 inches.
This Gibson J29 example is overall in good condition, with a repaired, cleated and touched up crack along the top center seam from the bridge towards the tail block. Its label and serial number date it to March 28 2014. It plays well, and is quite loud.
The first Gibson ‘Jumbo’ with ‘slope shoulders’ was introduced in 1934 to compete with Martin’s new ‘D’ Dreadnought bodies. This model was replaced in 1936 by the J-35, and then in 1942 the enduring classic J-45 took its place. From 1935 to 1940, the Advanced Jumbo used the same basic design but with Rosewood for the sides and back, and an ‘Advanced’ X brace system, shifting the X closer to the soundhole. Most of the other J models have used Mahogany for the sides and back, with a few models using Maple or Walnut for short runs.
The Gibson J29 has been discontinued but at writing there is still a Gibson legacy product page, which can be viewed here.
A brown hard shell case is included.
