The Gibson J185 12 String was built in Bozeman Montana from 2001 to 2004 and as the name suggests puts the classic J-185 into a 12 string configuration.
The J-185 model was originally built from 1951 to 1959 and featured a smaller body than the J-200, but also used Maple sides and back with Sitka Spruce top. The neck is Mahogany with Rosewood used for the bridge and bound fingerboard. The bridge has a distinctive pair of inlays in the form of the ‘Maltese Cross’, and the fingerboard inlays are a typical higher end Gibson split-parallelogram set in Mother of Pearl, as is the headstock Gibson logo. Tuners are gold-plated Grover Mini-Rotomatics,
This Gibson J185 12 String has a production date of December 16 2001 – the serial number is typed onto the label during the final Quality Control check, so the guitar was started perhaps a month earlier (it takes time for the lacquer finish to cure). It’s in great condition with little visible wear and no chips and only one or two small dents that don’t break the finish. There isn’t even much wear to the gold plating on the tuners! The flame maple set is really spectacular. Most importantly, the sound is full and rich with lots of good representation throughout the range. The bottom end is a bit thinner than the trebles and mids, which helps keep a 12-string in balance and doesn’t allow the bass to overwhelm everything else.
The original Gibson hard shell case is included.
