The Gibson Hummingbird is one of the most recognizable guitar models with its square-shoulder dreadnought body and distinctive hand-painted pickguard. Introduced in 1960 to compete with Martin’s square shoulder guitars, the Hummingbird debuted at the second highest price for Gibson acoustics just below the J-200. It has been used by many top artists on countless recordings and stages.
The Hummingbird features a Sitka Spruce top paired with tropical Mahogany for the sides, back, body blocks and neck. Indian Rosewood is used for the bridge and bound fingerboard. Position markers are split-parallelograms in Mother of Pearl. The head stock logos are also Mother of Pearl. The unique Hummingbird pickguard, like the similar Dove pickguard, is hand-painted by one dedicated Gibson Acoustic employee. Gibson feels that the relatively thick guard adds a degree of ‘natural compression’ to the guitar’s output, which helps adapt it to successful recordings.
Dating to May 7 2007 and built in Bozeman Montana under the supervision of master luthier Ren Ferguson, this Gibson Hummingbird is in overall good condition with light finish wear and a couple of small scratches. Fret wear is light to moderate particularly in the low positions. The finish is a reproduction of the way Gibson’s cherry sunburst fades over time with the red content diminishing.
As stock it was equipped with an L R Baggs Element Active pickup and preamp set, the controls tucked under the bass side of the soundhole.
The original Gibson hard shell case by TKL is included.
