The Gibson Flying V Faded was built for the decade from 2002 to 2012, and uses a stripped-down concept to deliver a great, high quality working instrument at reduced cost. This model was mostly built with a faded Cherry finish and the black seen here was relatively unusual.
Ted McCarty, the president of Gibson introduced the Flying V in 1958, along with the Explorer and the almost mythical Moderne.
Unfortunately, none of these designs caught on; the Flying V was dropped after one year and the Explorer was built until 1963. Perhaps one or two Modernes may have been built, but none have been found.
Of course times and styles have changed, and all of these ‘futuristic’ Gibson designs – except the Moderne – have become very popular.
The Gibson Flying V Faded is a great, straight ahead guitar. It pairs Mahogany for the body and neck, with Indian Rosewood for the fingerboard and that’s it for woods. To simplify the guitar, a standard ABR type tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece set are installed in place of the original string-through design, and a set of Kluson Deluxe style tuners are at the head. Wiring is pretty standard, with a pair of uncovered humbucking pickups controlled by a pickup selector, individual volume controls, and a master tone. This example, dating to February 5th 2007 at Nashville, has had its original pickups replaced with a Seymour Duncan JB / 59 pickup set. The original Gibson pickups are included, and are in the case. Wear is minor, with little finish or fret wear. It’s very resonant and plays well, and has the unmistakable V look.
The original Gibson hard shell case is included.
