Created for the folk boom of the early 1960’s, the Gibson FJN Folksinger Jumbo Natural Finish has a few differences from Gibson’s regular dreadnoughts. While it uses the Jumbo body size found on guitars like the SJ, the FJN has a wide 12-fret neck – the nut is nearly 2 inches wide – and is braced for nylon, Silk & Steel, or very light steel strings. Interest in the FJN faded with the folk boom, and by 1967 the FJN was taken out of production.
This Gibson FJN example was built during 1964 at the original Gibson plant in Kalamazoo, Michigan. For all its differences, its construction follows the same pattern as many of Gibson’s other successful models. The top is Sitka Spruce, with Mahogany for the body blocks, sides, back and neck. The nearly-flat, 12-fret fingerboard and bridge are Rosewood, and at that time this meant Brazilian Rosewood. The position markers are the split-parallelogram design used on other higher end Gibson models. The tuners are the original strip-mount Kluson models with creme plastic buttons. Back cracks were repaired and cleated some time ago. The bridge appears to have been shaved and the saddle is relatively low, but the action is decent as is. This guitar has not had a neck reset. A pair of largish white tap plates are original to the guitar.
A period black arched-top hard shell case is included.
