Instrument Categories: Mandolins, SOLD
The Gibson F9 mandolin is a ‘no frills’ model featuring a carved and tuned spruce top and flame maple back, flame maple sides and neck, and an Ebony fingerboard, bridge and head plate with Mother of Pearl script Gibson logo. Only the top is bound, and the instrument sports a satin finish in a vintage brown tint. As stock, there is no pickguard. Position markers are only on the bass side of the fingerboard.
While fairly plain, the F9 is a fully a Gibson F-style mandolin, with 14 inch scale length, 1.04 inch nut width, and a rounded V neck profile. The tuners are nickel plated with pearloid buttons, and the Gibson-engraved tailpiece is nickel plated.
This example dates to 2007 at Nashville, and is in overall good condition though it does carry honest play wear. The finish around the top end of the treble F-hole shows wear from the player’s fingers resting on the top, while fret wear is light to moderate particularly around the first three frets. But because it’s been played, its voice has developed and is bright yet warm with lots of articulation and plenty of presence.
The Gibson F-style mandolin has been perhaps the most influential of American mandolins, since Orville Gibson re-invented the mandolin and created the arched-top guitar in the closing days of the 19th century.
This Gibson F9 predates the 2010 floods in Nashville, which heavily damaged the Gibson shops ending both mandolin and banjo production. Mandolins have slowly re-appeared in very limited numbers, but the banjo line seems to be gone forever.
Sold with a shaped TKL hard shell case, which contains a strap.
