Gibson introduced the radically new, automobile influenced Explorer in 1958 along with the Flying V and mythical Moderne. Unlike tail fins, however, they didn’t take off. The model was built till 1959, then again for 1963. It wasn’t until the end of Cream days, with Eric Clapton using one, that it suddenly became interesting again. Other companies started copying it, and Gibson finally relaunched it in 1976.
The Gibson Explorer has been a more or less regular production model since then in a number of variations, mostly finding a home in harder rock bands; it’s seldom seen on Country stages.
This Gibson Explorer in Vintage White has a simple construction – Mahogany for the body and neck, and Ebony for the fingerboard. 496R and 498T pickups are installed and controlled by a pickup selector, individual volume and a master tone control. The rest of the hardware includes Grover min0i-RotoMatic tuners, a Tune-O-Matic bridge and stop tailpiece. Schaller Strap-Lock tuners have been installed.
This guitar is in very nice, clean condition. There is a bit of finish chipping at the side dots on the bass edge of the fingerboard. This is likely due to a temperature fluctuation causing unequal shrinkage.
Like many Explorers, this is a surprisingly comfortable, well balanced guitar and they’re quite comfortable to play, standing or sitting.
The original rectangular black case is included, which isn’t in quite as good condition as the guitar itself.
