The Gibson ES335 Dot reissue draws from the groundbreaking 1958 ES-335 that blended archtop and solidbody guitar styles. Gaining immediate acceptance by players in many genres, this model has been in production continuously since its introduction.
Here we’re looking at what looks like a ‘Plain Top’ version of the Gibson ES335 Dot, built at the now-closed Gibson Memphis plant and dating to June 7, 2012. In terms of construction and hardware, these are identical to the much more expensive ‘Figured Top’ models; the difference is the figuring on the Maple laminates used for the top, sides and back. The center block is the same solid Maple, and the neck is Mahogany with a bound Indian Rosewood fingerboard and Mother of Pearl dot position markers. Gibson 57 Classic Humbuckers are installed and run through a standard Gibson wiring scheme of selector switch and individual volume and tone controls. The output jack is on the front of the guitar. Grover Roto-Matic tuners are installed at the head, and an ABR-1 bridge and stop tailpiece complete the hardware.
This example sports a Heritage Cherry nitrocellulose lacquer finish and is in overall good condition with light wear to the back in the form of gentle ‘buckle rash’, a sign that the guitar was used as intended. However the rest of the finish is very clean, with some natural oxidization taking the gloss down, and fret wear is very light. This guitar is complete and original. If you want a 335, these ‘Plain Top’ models are a great way to get one.
This Gibson ES335 Dot is sold with its original hard shell case.
