The Gibson ES175T is based on the classic full bodied ES175, but with sides just over half the thickness. This model appeared in Gibson Catalogs from 1976 to 1979. Before being discontinued, approximately 333 were shipped in the Wine Red finish seen here, Natural, and Sunburst.
Sporting a single Florentine (pointed) cutaway, the Gibson ES175T has some visual similarities to other models, like the ES125TDC, except that it has higher grade appointments and hardware.
The Gibson ES175T (which in the standard Gibson model nomenclature should perhaps the ES-175TDC, for Thinline Double pickup Cutaway) uses a 16.25 inch wide laminate Maple body, and a 3-piece Maple neck with volute and 24.75 inch (628.6mm) scale length Rosewood fingerboard with split-parallelogram position markers and Mother of Pearl headstock logo and ‘leaf’ inlay. The bridge has a traditional archtop ‘floating’ bridge made of Rosewood. On this 1976 example, the fingerboard appears to be, and the bridge base unquestionably is, Brazilian Rosewood. This wood may have been chosen to use up remaining stocks on a new model aimed at the professional player.
For hardware, tuners are two-line Gibson branded Kluson Deluxe models with plastic Keystone buttons. A Chrome plated Tune-O-Matic bridge sits on its Rosewood base, and an ES-175 style tailpiece with raised diagonals on the crossbar is installed. Electronics include a pair of standard Patent-Number humbucking pickups, individual volume and tone controls, and a three-position pickup selector on a rubber shock mount. This shock mount is found on higher end Gibson hollow body models, and reduces the audible ‘Thump’ when the selector is used. The pickguard is original. The neck position strap pin was moved from the face of the heel to the heel cap, and the hole plugged and touched up.
This very nice Gibson ES175T is in overall good shape with some finish wear, not surprising on a now-45 year old instrument. However there is very little wear to the plating and fret wear is light. This model, targeted to Jazz players, works very well with flat wound strings, but is presently strung with standard round wounds.
A non-original, Japanese hard shell case is included.
