Here we have a Gibson ES175 sunburst, built during 1960 in Kalamazoo, Michigan and sporting a refinish and a pair of gold Guild humbuckers.
The Gibson ES175 sunburst – its primary finish, though it was also available in natural at extra cost – was introduced in 1949 and produced until 2017. At that point, Gibson was restructuring and terminated several models and the Memphis plant. It is based on a number of previous Gibson arched top electric models, with Maple Laminates used for the body to reduce feedback. The neck is Mahogany with a bound Rosewood fingerboard; in 1960 this would have been sourced from Brazil.
The ES-175 quickly became one of the most common guitars for working jazz and pop guitarists, though it was also used by a number of up and coming rock ‘n roll guitarists in the 1950’s. Steve Howe of Yes used an ES175, so they can work on arena sized stages!
Here we’re looking at a Gibson ES175 sunburst. The guitar was refinished some years ago and the finish is in good condition with some light natural lacquer checking. The original Kluson Deluxe tuners have been replaced with gold-plated Schaller models, and the original Gibson pickups with gold plated Guild humbuckers. The original wooden bridge was replaced with a gold tune-o-matic style unit. Other parts, such as the bracket for the non-original pickguard, the switch nut, and tailpiece have either been plated or replaced with gold-plated pieces. The frets appear to be original and the guitar is strung with flat-wound strings. There is some wear to the fingerboard, and the fret ends have been filed back over the years, removing the binding ‘nubs’ that result from Gibson’s fretting process.
This Gibson ES175 plays well, and has the typical narrower and slim early 60’s neck.
A brown Gibson arched top hard shell case is included.
