One of the classic musical workhorses, the Gibson ES175 single pickup guitar made its debut in 1949 with a P-90 at the neck, with the pickup updated to the all-new humbucker in 1957. In 1952, the ES175D (for Double pickup) appeared, with a second pickup in the bridge position.
These guitars were immediate hits with professional players and serious amateurs in many genres – Jazz, Pop, and Country were the most common and the ES-175 was a standard for jazz players from its introduction until being recently discontinued. However, in the Rock world, the ES175D even made it onto the largest stages in arenas and stadiums, in the hands of players like Steve Howe of Yes.
The ES175 Single pickup model, like the ES-175D, uses Maple Laminate body construction to reduce feedback, and the body is bound top and back. The neck is Mahogany with a bound Rosewood fingerboard and the floating bridge is also Rosewood; on some models, an ABR-1 ‘tune-o-matic’ bridge is installed for improved intonation.
This Gibson ES175 Single Pickup model was built at the historic Kalamazoo, Michigan plant during 1966 and is in overall good condition. It has natural and expected lacquer checking and age-related yellowing, with very few (and small) chips. It has been refretted, which extended the fret bead to the outside edge of the binding – giving more playing surface. The new frets have very light wear, and the guitar plays very well and cleanly. Typical of 1960’s Gibson models, the nut width is relatively narrow compared to modern versions, at just under 1.59 inches (40.25mm).
This guitar is supplied with a non-original but good quality arched top hard shell case.
