The Gibson ES-345 is the middle range of Gibson’s ES Thinline series and first appeared in 1958, using the new Seth Lover designed Humbucking pickups.
It’s a real treat to see and play a relatively early model ES-345, this one built in 1964 at the Gibson plant in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and especially one in such good physical and playing condition. This guitar has been refretted and plays very nicely. The finish is in good condition, especially considering that it’s been played enough to require a refret; there is a fair amount of finish wear on the back of the neck between the 3rd and 7th positions to bare wood, but there are no dents or dings. The headstock has never been broken and hence has had no repairs; the body back shows some buckle rash, a few small marks on the top and of course there is natural finish checking. Overall the finish is in good condition. The gold plating is largely worn off the pickup covers, bridge body and tailpiece, but is generally intact on the tuning gear bodies. It’s wired for stereo, and of course has the stock ES-345 Varitone. The stereo cable is included in the case, which is an original black case with orange interior.
As a mid-1960’s model, the neck taper is more pronounced than in modern versions. At the nut, these necks can be relatively narrow, but become full width towards the body.
