The Gibson ES-339 was a hit from its introduction in 2007 using the concept and classic lines of the ES-335, but with a scaled down body. All of the other features line up between the two models – the scale lengths, neck sizes and hardware are the same. The build quality is identical, with Maple laminates for the body, Mahogany for the neck and a Rosewood fingerboard. The headstock logos and position markers are Mother of Pearl.
The Gibson ES or Electric Spanish (as distinct from, say, Hawaiian or Steel) guitar appeared around 1936 as the ES-150, a standard archtop with a fairly large pickup, now commonly called the ‘Charlie Christian’ pickup installed in the neck position. The range of models rapidly grew, first adding pickups to existing designs and ultimately developing new electric-specific models.
But as stage and performance volumes continued to rise, solutions had to be found to the new problem of feedback. First, solid tops and backs were replaced by laminates. Solidbody guitars were an obvious solution as the body could not resonate enough to feed back (though loose pickup coil windings can) and the Fender designs took the market by storm.
Then, in 1958 the ES-335 Thinline appeared, featuring a body as thin as the 1955 Byrdland, but with the addition of a solid center block. This provided the tonal profile of an archtop, but with the feedback resistance of a solidbody. These elegant guitars were immediately popular and have found their place in many musical genres.
This Gibson ES-339 is a relatively early model, built during 2008 at the Gibson Memphis Custom Shop. It is in great condition, with slight play wear to the finish and very little fret wear. It’s very comfortable to play, and it sounds great.
The original Gibson Custom Shop branded case is included.
