The Gibson ES-335TD was an immediate hit at its 1958 introduction as a thinline, two pickup, double cutaway archtop electric. It addressed many of the needs professional guitarists had dealing with ever-increasing stage volumes while retaining the classic archtop tone profile. Over the years, the specs have changed somewhat, but the model has remained in constant production and has been seen and heard on countless stages and studios.
This Gibson ES-335TD bears the Made In Kalamazoo Michigan – Union Made label, and dates to about 1975 during Norlin’s ownership. This was at the beginning of the move to Nashville, which started in 1974 and was complete a decade later. This guitar has been used as intended over the years, by a regularly working country player, but has been well kept. It has had some practical improvements over the years. Originally, this guitar was fitted with a trapeze tailpiece, and was converted to a stop tailpiece with a more solid tune-o-matic style bridge. The tailpiece installed is a fine-tuner model, unfortunately the tuners screws are missing. The original Kluson Deluxe tuners were long ago changed to nickel-plated Grover Roto-Matics. The pickup covers have been removed, and a mini-switch has been added that adds series / parallel / single coil wiring for the bridge pickup.
This guitar plays well and has a somewhat narrower, though still full, neck. That narrowness and the block position markers remind me of mid 1960’s models. The neck is built of 3 pieces of Maple, rather than Mahogany, and has a volute typical of the period.
The walnut-stain gloss finish is original, and in decent condition particularly considering that it was used professionally in performance for years.
The original hard shell case is included.
