Built from 1959 to 1979, the Gibson EB-0 Electric Bass was for a time a very popular instrument, with up to 22,000 sold. Gibson’s EB series basses were used by top 60’s players like the late Jack Bruce, Felix Pappilardi, Jermaine Jackson, Ronnie James Dio and for a time Rick Danko. They are also popular for genres like Reggae where a very full bass tone is desired.
Using a simple construction of a slab Mahogany body with a set 3-piece Mahogany neck (Maple during some of the 1970’s) and Rosewood fingerboard, the Gibson EB-0 had a single neck pickup, fully adjustable bridge with optional mute, volume and tone controls, and a deep tone. The EB-3 added a bridge pickup and corresponding controls.
These basses were typically a short scale often listed as 30.5 inches, but we measure this one to 770mm or 3.315 inches. A ‘long’ 34 inch scale version, the EB-0L, was offered.
These basses are fun to play; the light weight and relatively compact size make it easy to get around, and the deep thump of the pickup fits well in a number of genres.
Here we’re looking at a Gibson EB-0 electric bass built during 1971 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and sporting the slotted peghead used from 1969 to 1974, with the previous solid peghead also available. This bass appears original and complete except for the lack of a sliding mute. The original tuners are Gibson-branded models likely built by Schaller and intended for slotted heads – the string posts are straight.
The cherry tint nitrocellulose finish is in good condition, with some buckle rash to the back and a couple of small dents on the neck. Fret wear is light, and the bass is presently strung with roundwounds.
Sold with case, possibly original.
