The late Tal Farlow was one of the great, influential American jazz guitarists and his signature Gibson archtop electric attests to his skill and the size of his hands! The Gibson Tal Farlow, unlike most other Gibson archtops, uses a full 25.5 inch scale length neck on a full 17 inch wide body.
The Tal Farlow first appeared in 1962, based on the ES-350 Farlow had used in the 1950’s but with humbucking pickups, figured woods, J-200 style inlays, a nameplate on the tailpiece and a unique faux scroll design on the cutaway. While a hit, it was never produced in large quantities and we only rarely see them.
This cherry-red finished Tal Farlow has a serial number dating to Monday, June 18 2001, though its second assembly-test label is signed by the late James W. Hutchins and dated to July 27 2001 – with the difference being accounted for by finish curing – and was built at the Gibson Nashville plant. It is in overall good, original condition and the woods are nicely figured. This guitar has been played, so the finish has some scuffing and one scratch on the back. Fretwear is light, and there’s lots of fret left for dressing; this guitar is and has been strung with flat-wounds, and these tend to be gentle on fretwire. It plays well and cleanly, and is remarkably comfortable given its size.
The original Gibson Custom hard-shell case is included.
