The Gibson Country Western appeared in 1956 as a natural-top version of the SJ or Southern Jumbo round-shoulder dreadnought. Really a marketing exercise, the key difference between the Country Western and SJ-Natural is the label! In 1964, the design shifted from round-shoulder to square-shoulder, and the model was discontinued in 1969.
This Gibson Country Western was built during the model’s first year, and is in good playing order. It has had some repairs – it is 62 years old, after all – including some cleated top cracks and over-sprayed finish. The tuners have been replaced with new vintage-style models, and work well. As is typical, the pickguard is lifting a bit. Under the bridge, a sub-plate has been added to the bridge plate due to normal wear.
The top is spruce, the back, sides and neck are mahogany, and the fingerboard and bridge are rosewood. The fingerboard is bound and has dual-parallellogram position markers, as an ‘upgrade’ from more basic models like th J-45.
This is a very nice guitar to play. The round-shoulder design produces a full, warm tone that goes well with a voice, and the neck is relatively narrow though it has a slight 50’s fullness.
A newer TKL hard shell case is included.
