The Gibson BB King Lucille was created for the very real needs of a constantly working guitarist dealing with the reality of stage volumes. BB King led a relatively large band, and tended to turn his amp to 10 and control volume from the guitar. This could easily result in wild feedback.
To address this, Gibson modified the iconic ES-355, removing the F-holes to seal the acoustic chambers and added an access panel on the back for installing and servicing the electronics. Gretsch took a similar approach for Chet Atkins models in the late 1950’s, sealing the body, adding trestle bracing, and providing a rear access panel.
The Gibson BB King Lucille first appeared in 1988 and has been in production from the Nashville plant since. This example dates to 1995 and is in good overall condition, with light fret wear, but there are a couple of scratches on the top behind the fine-tuner tailpiece and a bit of buckle rash on the back. It plays well, and there’s lots of fret height so there is lots of traction for bends. The original brown Gibson hardshell case is included.
