The Gibson Batwing SG made its debut in 1966, with an extended pickguard covering the top above, between and below the strings, and also supporting the pickups. These were produced until 1971, at which point the SG Deluxe replaced it.
The SG has been used by many players over the years, and the Gibson Batwing SG is very frequently seen in the hands of the great Angus Young of AC/DC. The large ‘batwing’ pickguard is well suited to an active playing style. It offers significant protection to the finish. And, incidentally, much easier pickup and electronic maintenance. That can be a real bonus for a touring musician!
Here we’re looking at a Gibson Batwing SG Standard, built at the Gibson Nashville plant and dating to June 9th, 2005. This guitar features the large ‘batwing’ pickguard.
Construction is typical Gibson Batwing SG with the Standard trimmings. The body is Mahogany slab double cutaway design with edge contours, Mahogany neck with a bound Rosewood fingerboard. The head tips back at 17 degrees. The neck is mostly made of one piece of Mahogany, except for two small pieces to fill out the ‘wings’ of the headstock. Two humbuckers are installed, and the tuners are Kluson Deluxe reproductions with keystone tuners. These are a bit of a better choice for this type of guitar. Klusons are slightly lighter than Grover Roto-Matics, and this helps with overall balance.
This Gibson Batwing SG Standard has been used, and is in overall good shape. It has some honest play wear consisting of pick marks to the top and pickguard – that’s why it’s there! – and a bit of buckle rash on the back.
The SG is a great, versatile guitar for many styles, and this example is a great rock guitar at a good price!
