The Gibson 1941 SJ-100, built in Bozeman Montana, recreates one of the rarest Gibson acoustics – the SJ-100, using a Super Jumbo body with Mahogany back and sides. These were first introduced in 1939, replaced in 1941 but rapidly discontinued with under 180 built.
The 1941 SJ-100 uses Sitka Spruce for the top and braces, Mahogany for the back, sides and neck, and Indian Rosewood for the fingerboard and bridge. An L R Baggs Element pickup is installed at the factory, like most modern Gibson acoustics, and it’s ready to go. The headstock shape is very reminiscent of the late 1930’s and 1940’s pegheads, with a Mother of Pearl script Gibson logo.
Thus guitar also reflects a subtle but significant change in Gibson’s production, visible when you look at the edge of the fingerboard. Until recently, Gibson’s traditional production process had the fingerboard prepared, fretted and bound before being installed to the neck, and this results in the fret end being covered by the binding. Unfortunately, over time and due to shrinkage in response to lower humidity, this can result in vertical cracks on the binding as the fingerboard shrinks. In Gibson’s new process, the fingerboard is bound and prior to having the frets installed. The fret tangs are notched to fit inside the binding, and the fret beads go right to the edge of the binding, preventing the broken-binding issue and also providing a slightly wider playing surface.
This example dates to 2013 and is in all original, very good condition. It plays very nicely, and the mahogany gives a somewhat warmer tone than the maple SJ-200 models, but with the clarity and definition of mahogany guitars.
The original hard shell case is included.
