The Gibson 1930s L00 Classic is a reproduction of what became a very popular small body guitar introduced in 1932 and built until 1946. At that time, the Dreadnought or Jumbo design was just re-entering the market with Martin’s 1931 D-1, which became the D-18 in 1932.
The 1930s L-00 Classic takes its cues from the post-1937 models; prior to that year, the back was not bound. While the Gibson 1930s L00 Classic was a limited edition model built only during 2015, it has survived in the Gibson catalog as the ‘Blues King’ and with some decorative changes, the Keb’ Mo’ Bluesmaster.
Built like the later 1930s versions, the Gibson 1930s L00 Classic features an Adirondack Spruce top, Mahogany for the body and neck and Indian Rosewood for the fingerboard and bridge (originally this would have been Brazilian Rosewood). The guitar carries a black finish for simple and practical reasons: the solid colour allows the use of visually lower grade or mismatched woods and the reduction in cost and waste was extremely important during the Depression and Wartime years that these guitars were produced.
This example received its label and serial number at the Gibson Acoustic setup shop in Bozeman, Montana on April 22, 2015. It’s in great, clean condition with very little wear. It plays and sounds great, and is very comfortable to sit and play.
The original Gibson hard shell case is included.
Here’s how the builder describes the L-00, the basis of the Gibson 1930s L00 Classic:
“Gibson was a pioneer in the development of small body guitars in the beginning of the 1900s with its “L-Series Small Body” acoustics. These smaller Gibsons deliver a tonality that is best described in Gibson’s 1934 catalog as a sound of “perfect balance.”
