Brand: GW Barry
Instrument Categories: Acoustic Steel String, Guitars, SOLD
G W Barry, like many other of the current top shelf Canadian luthiers, apprenticed in Jean Larrivee‘s shop and this shows in the careful selection of materials and quality of construction.
This G W Barry M-Body guitar was built during 1998 at G W Barry’s shop in Toronto, Canada. As such, it features Barry’s ‘M’ body design, derived partly from the Martin style body. The top is Sitka Spruce with a paua abalone rosette and top binding, the back, sides and neck plate of Indian Rosewood, with mahogany for the neck and ebony for the bridge and bound fingerboard. A Fishman Matrix pickup, with no controls, is installed to an endpin jack. Tuners are by Gotoh, and have ebony buttons. The A button has a crack, which is relatively common with these units.
The G W Barry M-Body is a spectacular guitar, with excellent representation throughout the frequency range. It’s basically got all of everything. At 20 years old, it has some cosmetic wear and moderate fretwear. The fret work itself is extremely clean, as expected from a luthier with such extensive experience. There is a small dent on the top, smaller ones on the headstock, and a top crack on the treble side of the sound hole was repaired some time ago. The saddle was adjusted at one point, and is a bit short for the slot, so a small gap shows at each end; this does not affect the saddle’s contact with the bottom of the slot.
This guitar plays very well, with the action currently set to 4/64ths to 5/64ths treble to bass. It really sparkles, yet has a fully represented low and mid range tones.
An arched top, hard shell case is included.
