Instrument Categories: Acoustic Steel String, Guitars, SOLD
This G W Barry Concert Cutaway steel string dates to the year 2000 and was built in Toronto, using Sitka Spruce for the top, paired with Indian Rosewood for the back, and sides, and streaked Ebony for the fingerboard and bridge. The neck and blocks are Mahogany, and the rosette uses and Abalone ring.
The Barry concert body draws from the proportions of the Gibson J-185, but in a more curvaceous – dare we say bodacious – rendering of that design. This example dates to early 2000 – the label is a holdover from the ’19xx’ year series – and as one of Barry’s original Concert models is fairly large. Over time, the Barry Concert has grown to a more compact size.
For hardware, Schaller tuning gears with ebony buttons are installed, the nut and saddle are bone, and an L R Baggs pickup system is installed to an endpin jack.
‘Streaked Ebony’ is very commonly seen now. It is tonally identical to jet-black Ebony, and aside from the visual grain, the difference is in forestry practices. Until the late 1990’s, felled raw Ebony trees that were insufficiently black were left on the forest floor as waste. This practice has largely ended, resulting in significant improvements in both conservation and compensation for the forestry workers.
Delivering a full, rich and harmonically complex sound, this G W Barry Concert Cutaway plays very well and is in very good condition. The nitrocellulose lacquer finish shows very little wear, only natural sinking as all lacquer will do over time.
The original black TKL hard shell case is included.
