At the end of the 1970s it was apparent that the classic models needed updating and the Fender ‘The Strat’ model appeared in 1980 with this aim. Built from 1980 to 1983, towards the end of the CBS period, The Strat featured an ash body, solid colours and matching (small) headstocks, a gold plated heavy brass bridge and control knobs, and revised wiring with the second tone control replaced with a two-position rotary series/parallel switch.
One of the first acts when CBS purchased Fender in 1965 had been to enlarge the Stratocaster headstock, allowing for a more prominent logo. For the Fender The Strat, the small vintage-style headstock was brought back, but not quite exactly as the original jigs and forms were either not available or very worn.
During this time, Fender’s management was also updated, with three major executives brought in from Yamaha brought in to revitalize the company. Within a few years – 1985 – this resulted in a management team buying Fender from CBS, though the deal did not include any of the physical plant. For most of that year, there was no US production of Fender guitars – they were all Made in Japan.
This Fender ‘The Strat’ is in very good, clean and original condition, sporting a nicely aged ‘Olympic White’ finish on the body and on the headstock front. The hardware is gold plated, and it has very little wear. Fretwear on the Maple neck is also very light. This guitar plays well, the electronics work well and there is a wide range of tones available from the secondary series/parallel switch.
The original rectangular molded Fender hard shell case is included.
