This lovely Fender Telecaster dates to early 1963 and carries a professionally done Shoreline Gold refinish done by Mike Spicer at The Peghead in Hamilton, Ontario. The Peghead is a small private shop next to George Furlanetto’s FBass shop.
While the maple-neck Fender Telecaster was being quite successfully produced in almost its original form, by 1959 Fender wanted to widen the appeal of its instruments. Specifically, Gibson players were targeted by adding Rosewood fingerboards to the Maple necks, appearing on the brand-new 1958 Jazzmaster, 1959 to the Telecaster and Stratocaster and then the top of the line 1962 Jaguar. At first, the Maple neck blanks had flat tops and a crowned ‘Slab’ of Brazilian Rosewood was added. But by late summer of 1962, Fender introduced new processes to allow use of a Rosewood veneer on a curved Maple neck. The guitar seen here is thus an early example of the new ‘veneer’ Rosewood fingerboards. Fender ended use of Brazilian Rosewood in 1966, shifting to Indian Rosewood.
This Fender Telecaster has a neck date of 3DEC62B, and was assembled and sold in early 1963. While it has been professionally refinished, its hardware is largely original. It has been refretted and plays well. The tuners, bridge, pickups and electronics are the original parts. The original wiring scheme has been restored; it had been modified to the early scheme with a heavy capacitor on the neck pickup. The original pickguard is long gone, but prior to its replacement had apparently been customized with a layer of fur. The Shoreline Gold refinish is well done, with light natural checking. The neck finish is original and on the back is largely worn off; the head finish is mostly intact with light chipping to the decal.
The original brown hard shell case is included.
