This Fender Telecaster Blonde Refinish dates largely to 1964, with a 1966 neck pickup and a newer pickguard of the correct white/black/white layering. Long ago, the body was stripped and refinished blonde.
The neck has some lacquer sprayed over the original finish, but this is quite worn and much of the wood is exposed – which makes it very comfortable. The original decal is in good condition; at the time, Fender applied the decals over the lacquer finish, and many have not worn well. The fingerboard is Brazilian Rosewood, as was common at the time, and the position marker dots are ‘pearloid’, a material that replaced the ‘clay’ dots in fall of 1964. The original frets have been replaced – completely expected for a working guitar – with jumbo frets, and these have moderate wear.
Tuners are original ‘dual-line’ Kluson models – the words ‘Kluson’ and ‘Deluxe’ are on separate lines – and the neck plate bears an L-series serial number. These numbers appeared from very late 1962 to 1965, and are pre-CBS construction. Fender was acquired by CBS in early 1965, though the deal had been in progress for some time.
The Fender Telecaster Blonde Refinish body is Ash, as has been very common on Fender guitars; it is readily available, easy to work with and can have an interesting grain structure. Original blonde finishes were translucent and showed the grain filler through the blonde.
This guitar plays well, and has that 60’s tele sound and feel!
The original case is long gone, and a new gig bag is supplied.
