Introduced in 1954 and bearing a suspicious resemblance to the outlines of the early Precision Bass, the Fender Stratocaster Sunburst became one of the most successful, popular and versatile guitar designs, used in many musical genres.
CBS purchased the Fender company on January 5 1965 and had control until March 5, 1985, when it was sold to an internal management group.
Here we’re looking at a CBS era Fender Stratocaster Sunburst, one of the most distinctive of Fender’s guitars and finishes. This example dates to late 1977 and is in good working condition, appearing largely original. The contoured body is Ash, with a Maple neck, here with a Walnut ‘Skunk Stripe’ indicating that the truss rod was mounted from the rear, unlike many Rosewood fingerboard models that have the truss rod mounted from the top, before the fingerboard is installed. The hardware, including F-branded tuners supplied by Schaller, a set of three single coil pickups with black covers on a black pickguard, the original 3-way pickup selector, and the cast body trem bridge.
In 1977, Fender began to introduce a radical new innovation for the Stratocaster – the 5 way switch. The 3 way and 5 way switches are almost identical. The difference is in the number of detents stamped into the switch frame. Some players, realizing that there were two extra pickup combinations available, removed the switch spring so the lever did not stop at the detents, or carefully balanced the switch lever ‘in between’.
This Fender Stratocaster Sunburst is in good working order, with expected wear mostly in the form of some ‘buckle rash’ on the back. Fret wear is moderate, and the finish on the neck is in good shape with some small chipping along the edge of the board, a common occurrence.
The original Fender hard shell case is included.
