The Fender SRV Signature Series Stratocaster was first built in late 1991, but introduced at the 1992 Winter NAMM show in Anaheim, California. Still in production, this model is based on the late Stevie Ray Vaughn’s Number One Stratocaster, a sunburst 1963 model.
Here we’re looking at a Fender SRV Signature Series Stratocaster, built during 1993 at the Fender plant in Corona, California. Like Number One, it uses an Alder body paired with a Maple neck and a “slab” board fingerboard – however, the fingerboard is apparently Pau Ferro, not Rosewood. In 1963, Fender had not quite worked out how to wrap a thin layer of Rosewood over a curved neck on a production line basis, so a flat board was installed and the top received the crown. And, in 1963, the fingerboard would have been Brazilian Rosewood. That is very seldom used now, and substitutes have been explored for some time. Pau Ferro is sometimes known as ‘Mexican Rosewood’, and has a slightly tighter grain and lighter colour.
This Fender SRV signature guitar is on overall good condition, though it has one repair to the headstock, which suffered a bit of unusual damage. The price has been reduced to reflect this. The rounded end of the head split with a crack down along the lower edge of the head below the decal. I can personally attest that this is a hard thing to do. It was repaired and a small bit of fill is present. This is purely aesthetic, and has no impact on structure tone or playability.
The rest of the guitar is clean and has light wear. A ‘CUSTOM’ sticker has been added below the bridge. The tuners, strap pins, neck plate, jack plate and left-handed trem bridge are gold plated.
The pickguard is engraved with ‘S R V’. Number One had three letter stickers, but those were so worn that Stevie Ray ordered replacements, then decided that it would be better to engrave them into the pickguard.
The Fender SRV signature series neck is based on a typical 1963 shape, which to my own hand is one of the most comfortable profiles. It plays well, and is quite responsive.
The original tweed hard shell case is included, and contains the trem arm.
