The Fender Reclaimed Redwood Stratocaster is one of the more unusual guitars to come from Fender in recent times, and is built with old-growth Redwood from a decommissioned bridge in Bakersfield, California.
Like other builders of wooden products, Fender has been investigating the use of “alternative” woods. The Telebration series introduced a number of alternates. In 2012, a hundred year old bridge built of old-growth California Redwood in Bakersfield California was closed, decommissioned, and the materials salvaged. Fender obtained an amount of this old-growth Redwood and gained enough wood to make a number of guitars over several years starting in 2013.
This Fender Reclaimed Redwood Stratocaster dates to 2014 and is in overall good condition. Aside from the use of Redwood for the body, which is lightweight, resonant and fairly soft, the neck is Maple but with a ‘Channel Bound’ fingerboard. This means that the neck looks like it has binding, but in reality, the compound-radius Rosewood fingerboard is inlaid into a channel cut into the top of the Maple neck. The Fender logo on the front of the head is laser etched into the Maple, instead of the traditional decal-based logo.
Hardware is similar to other US made Fender strats of the era. Sealed Fender-branded staggered-post tuners, likely made by Schaller are at the head. The shorter posts on the G B and E strings help reduce the need for string trees, which introduce an amount of friction. The bridge is a modern two-post vibrato model with Fender-stamped, bent vintage style saddles. Pickups are in an HSS configuration, with a Fender Diamondback humbucker at the bridge and American Vintage ’65 grey bottom single coils in the middle and neck positions. The pickguard and backplate are brown, anodized aluminum, a material Fender used for a time in the 1950’s.
This Fender Reclaimed Rosewood Stratocaster is an unusual but quite good special edition guitar, with a
The original black, rectangular Fender hard shell case is included.
