It’s hard to overstate the impact of the Fender Precision Bass. Deceptively simple, it changed the way popular music is performed and recorded. Prior to its appearance in 1951 as a logical extension of the concepts of what was ultimately named the Telecaster, virtually all string bass instruments were acoustic, fretless, and bulky. Leo Fender’s design meant that the bass instrument electric, fretted (for precision in pitch), and not only portable but extremely durable and reliable.
Here we’re looking at a sunburst, Rosewood fingerboard Fender Precision Bass, built in Fullerton, California during the era of CBS’s Fender ownership. It is dated to 1971 based on its features and its serial number plate. The body is Alder, and the neck Maple with an Indian Rosewood fingerboard.
This lovely P-Bass shows all the signs of having been used as intended over the last 52 years – because it delivers. It has expected wear and natural checking to the body finish. Wear to what appear to be the original frets is minor, suggesting that the bass was strung with flatwounds for most of its working life. Currently, it has round-wound strings. It is set up well plays smoothly. It’s nicely resonant and sounds great, like a vintage Precision.
The original hard shell case is included.
