The Fender Precision Bass Fretless (Acoustic / Electric) is an interesting and somewhat rare custom order model, using a semi-hollow, Spruce top Mahogany F-hole body with Rosewood bridge. This lightweight, resonant body shows influences from the Telecaster Thinline. For electronics, this distinctive bass has both a Piezo bridge pickup and a Lace Sensor split pickup selected by a pan pot, with volume and TBX tone controls.
Built from 1990 to 1994, it’s also an odd mix of attributions as it bears both a Fender USA neck plate and Made In Japan decals and serial numbers on the heel. The ‘Made In Japan’ decal likely identifies it as having been made by FujiGen Gakki. Their original 1982 contract with Fender specified that FujiGen would use ‘Made In Japan’ and other builders, like Terada or Dyna, would use ‘Crafted in Japan’. The headstock decal only says ‘Fender’, with no model identification. The neck itself is Maple with a slab-type Indian Rosewood fingerboard.
This Fender Precision Bass Fretless (Acoustic / Electric) dates to January of 1993 based on results from the Fender serial number lookup page. The measurements of this example vary slightly from the published Fender specs, in particular the nut width is about 3mm narrower and the use of Nickel rather than Chrome plated parts.
It is in excellent, original condition with only the lightest wear. There is typical tarnish to the plating on the nickel-plated tuner buttons, slight scuffing to the neck plate, and that’s the most visible signs of age or wear.
Sold with the original rectangular, black with blue lining, molded case. `
