The Fender Mustang appeared in late summer 1964 as an improved version of the Duo-Sonic, meaning that it had the Fender Dynamic Vibrato added. It came in three colours, for the US Flag – Red, White and Blue. As time went on, more colours became available. Though it was intended as a ‘Student’ level guitar, it found favour with a number of hot players, including the late great Johnny Winter, Adrian Belew, David Byrne and Kurt Cobain.
Here we’re looking at a Fender Mustang in what’s now called a Faded Mocha finish, built during 1975 at the Fender facility in Fullerton, California. This example uses an Ash body paired with a Rosewood-fingerboard Maple neck. It appears to be completely stock, with creme button F-branded tuners (made for Fender by Schaller), the Dynamic Vibrato with barrel-style saddles, and pair of Mustang pickups each with a sliding 3-position selector switch. The center position is off, while the outside positions offer a phase reversal when both pickups are activated. Beyond that, master volume and tone controls, and a control plate-mounted output jack complete the hardware.
The Fender Mustang Faded Mocha finish is typical of the CBS era, a fairly heavy poly coating that is quite durable. Over time and use, this guitar has collected a number of scrapes and bumps, but is in generally good condition. Fretwear is light tending as usual to moderate in the more often used first few frets.
The original Fender rectangular hard shell case is included.
