Fender has produced a few versions of the Geddy Lee Jazz Bass, and here we have one of a set of 100 Limited Edition models built in 2015 and 2016, with a Flame Maple cap and Translucent Crimson finish.
Rush has been part of the musical landscape for decades. For me, that includes seeing them several times at high school dances where the stage was folded cafeteria tables. Those were great shows, and they were then as they are now great players, but their stage requirements have advanced somewhat.
The Fender Limited Edition USA Geddy Lee Jazz Bass was built in Corona, California, and is based on an Alder body with Flame Maple Top, finished in translucent crimson red poly. The neck is Maple with a combination of oil finish on the rear of the neck and gloss Poly on the fingerboard and headstock. The rear of the head has Geddy Lee’s signature.
In the style of 1970’s Jazz Basses, the position markers are black blocks, and the fingerboard is bound in black. In this case, the binding is unusual for Fenders as it rises up to the ends of the frets and the nut. This usually requires that the frets are installed before the binding.
For hardware, the Fender Limited Edition USA Geddy Lee Jazz Bass uses American Vintage Reverse open gear tuners and a thin Badass style bridge with Geddy’s name cast into the rear riser. Pickups are custom voiced American Vintage 1970’s Geddy Lee models. The pickguard is a multi-layer, dark faux pearloid.
This bass plays very well, sounds great and is very attractive.
A Fender 60th Anniversary hard shell case is included.
NOTE: This post has been updated. Originally, it indicated that this bass was the first of the set of 100 produced. On further investigation we’ve decided that is uncertain so we’ve removed that text.
