The Fender Jazzmaster appeared halfway through 1958, targeted at jazz artists, the group Fender hadn’t fully won over.
One of the key features of the Fender Jazzmaster was the introduction of a Rosewood fingerboard on the Maple neck. To this point in time, Fender necks had been a single piece of Maple with a rear Walnut ‘Skunk Stripe’ covering the truss rod channel. At first, these Rosewood fingerboards were of the ‘Slab’ type with a flat bottom and the truss rod was mounted from the front of the neck. It wasn’t until 1962 that Fender developed the tooling and techniques to wrap a thin veneer of Rosewood on a a curved Maple neck blank. Once that tooling was in place, the ‘Skunk Stripe’ re-appeared.
Here we’re looking at a Fender Jazzmaster built during 1960 in Fullerton California, in largely original and good condition. It sports an Alder body with a thin nitrocellulose lacquer tobacco sunburst finish and a three-layer faux-tortoise pickguard. The neck is Maple with a Brazilian Rosewood slab-bottom fingerboard. The ‘Fender Jazzmaster’ headstock decal is in very good shape – these were applied over the lacquer finish and many have degraded after all these years. The original bridge cover and Fender hang tag with serial number are included in the case. The serial number plate has been slightly modified by the engraving of a social insurance number in a very tiny font.
This wonderful piece plays well with the original frets, and sounds great.
At the time this guitar was built and sold to Fender’s Canadian distributors, import duties were structured to protect Canadian case manufacturers. Consequently, most of these guitars have ‘Distributor’ cases that are what was originally sold with the guitar, but manufactured in Canada. That’s the situation here.
