Introduced in 1962 and built until 1975, the Fender Jaguar Offset Body short scale electric debuted at the top end of the Fender line. The Offset body concept launched with the 1958 Jazzmaster, and though that model was not successful in its quest to win over the Jazz players who favored Gibson models, the lessons learned carried through into other models.
Here we’re looking at a very nice Fender Jaguar Offset body guitar in its original 3-tone sunburst. It’s in largely original condition and has been professionally re-fretted and set up – it’s ready to go! This example dates to 1964, with pot codes from that year, and was built at the Fender plant in Fullerton, California. It’s a Pre-CBS model, built before the sale of Fender to CBS which took effect on January 5, 1965. Aside from the somewhat complex and versatile control layout, the Jaguar features a 24 inch scale length, just a bit longer than the short-scale Gibson Byrdland, developed to allow very wide chord voicings.
Overall, this Fender Jaguar Offset Body guitar is in good condition and good working order. The nitrocellulose lacquer finish is all original with expected wear. There is a larger finish chip on the lower back side at the lower treble bout and some similar wear on the front side of the upper treble bout. The neck finish shows wear from playing. The Rosewood fingerboard is the non-Slab type, meaning that Fender had learned how to wrap a Rosewood layer over a crowned Maple neck, and the truss rod was mounted from the top, prior to installing the board. Consequently, there is no Walnut ‘Skunk Stripe’.
This 1964 Fender Jaguar Offset body guitar is sold with a period ‘Distributor’ hard shell case. It could be the case it was originally sold with, but there’s no real way to tell without original sales receipts. At the time, outside of the USA, Fender had distributors who often ordered guitars and cases separately and from separate sources. This was largely due to lower local costs, sometimes due to protective import tariffs. This was frequently the situation in Canada.
