The first limited edition model from the Custom Shop, the Fender HLE Gold 57 Stratocaster re-creates the guitar built in 1957 for Homer Haynes, one of the stars of Country comedy duo Homer and Jethro. This is not entirely a slavish copy of a 1957 model, as the center pickup is RW/RP (reverse wound, reverse polarity) to provide hum-cancelling in positions 2 and 4 of the 5-way switch.
The Fender Custom Shop was started in 1987 by then-Fender employees John Page and Michael Stevens. It’s been going strong ever since.
This Fender HLE 57 Stratocaster is, to say the least, distinctive. Aside from the one-piece Maple neck with a slight amber tinted clear lacquer finish and the stock-but-spare parchment pickguard, everything visible is gold plated or lacquered. It’s clear that this example, #382 of 500, has spent almost all of its time in its case as there is no meaningful wear or tarnish anywhere. It is in nearly-new condition. There may have been an anodized gold pickguard at one time but it is not included.
The original rectangular tweed 1957 style case is included, and contains the Certificate of Authenticity, original 57 style manuals, strap and spare trem spring.
