The Fender Custom Shop G E Smith Telecaster draws from a number of Fender vintage guitars – not just Telecasters, but also early Fender lap steels. As well, this model incorporates a few ‘tricks’ that a few players have discovered over the years, in particular screwing the bridge pickup directly to the body rather than mounting it on the bridge. As well, the bridge plate is shortened.
The Fender Custom Shop G E Smith Telecaster is a very straight ahead instrument, using the classic early 1950’s fatter maple neck on swamp ash body, with flat-head screws, instead of Philips screws. The pickups are American Vintage models, while the bridge plate is cut back to expose the pickup cavity; the pickup itself is bolted to the body. Smith feels that this contributes to an increased ‘fatness’ in the bridge pickup tone. The inlays draw from Fender lap steels, which Smith also plays.
This Fender Custom Shop G E Smith Telecaster was built by Fender in Corona, California during 2012.
