This Fender Custom Classic Stratocaster is a bit of an odd duck but exhibits one of Leo Fender’s original design intentions around the bolt-on neck. When putting together what became the Telecaster as an instrument to be manufactured, he realized that the neck joints (usually dovetails or tenons) found on virtually all guitars required significant effort and cost to create, assemble and service. He realized that a bolt-on neck could be built and installed or removed and replaced in a tiny fraction of the time needed for any set-neck. (At least, until Taylor introduced the NT neck and joint).
Exactly what has happened with this specific guitar is unknown, but what we see here is a Fender Custom Classic Stratocaster in translucent blonde over Ash – much like the 1950’s Fender finishes – built during 2005, mated with a 22-fret American Standard Stratocaster neck from 2013. Custom Classics sell for quite a bit more than this mixed example, but in practical terms – I think this really works.
The original Fender Custom Classic neck would have had a 50’s style V profile, 21 ‘vintage style’ low and narrow frets and a body-end truss rod adjuster. The American Standard neck, on the other hand, has a comfortable ‘C’ profile with rounded edges, 22 larger frets, and thankfully, the truss rod adjuster is at the head. One of the results is that this guitar has two legitimate serial numbers. The neck has one other upgrade – a set of excellent Fender locking tuners.
Overall, this guitar is in good shape with a couple of small finish chips on the body, one on the bass edge at the waist. It plays well and cleanly. The American Standard necks from this period are perhaps my favourite.
The original Tweed Fender Custom Classic case is included, and is in very good condition with the body’s COA (Certificate of Authenticity).
