Built from 1981 to 1982, Fender Bullet Standard and Deluxe models were designed by John Page and built at the Fullerton plant as replacements for the Mustang and Duo-Sonic.
This Fender Bullet Standard dates to 1981 at Fullerton, California. It’s in overall good condition with finish wear and patina expected from a 41 year old guitar. Fretwear is light to moderate and the Indian Rosewood fingerboard is in good condition. This is a nice guitar to play! It is full scale, with a body like a thinner Telecaster.
Positioned as entry level models, the Fender Bullet Standard and Deluxe had large similarities, pairing the same single-cutaway Ash body with a Rosewood-fingerboard Maple neck. The differed mostly in hardware, particularly the pickguard and bridge. The Standard has a one-piece metal pickguard with an integrated bridge formed by a lip at the back edge of the pickguard, drilled for saddle adjustment screws and strings. The Deluxe carried a more conventional three-layer pickguard with a separate hard-tail bridge that allowed the strings to travel through the body.
Notably, the body on these models as with older Mustang and Duo-Sonics, are thinner at 1.691 inches (42.9mm) than ‘Pro-Line’ Fenders like the Telecaster – 1.803 inches (45.80mm) or Stratocaster at 1.780 inches or 45.22mm.
While these differences seem small, they reduced production costs a worthwhile amount. They also make it impossible to add a Strat-type tremolo to the body! This is still the case on some lower-end Fender models. Many owners have started to plan upgrades including trems, only to find that it’s not possible.
