Crafted for Fender Japan, this Fender Antigua Telecaster dates to 2002-2004 and was built by Tokai Gakki in Hammamatsu. Not many of these were built, and some carried a factory Bigsby. The heel carries the serial number and the ‘Crafted in Japan’ logo, and these reveal the builder.
We also have recently listed a matching Fender Antigua Stratocaster from the same period and maker, and there were about 400 of those built.
When CBS sold Fender Management the company, the deal did not include plant or fixtures, leaving Fender with no US production facilities. Consequently Fender relied on its Japanese partners, with priority going to Fuji-Gen Gakki. Part of that arrangement was that only Fuji-Gen could use the ‘Made in Japan’ logo, and any other builders had to use ‘Crafted in Japan’.
Here we’re looking at a Fender Antigua Telecaster from the 2002-2004 period, intended for sale in Japan. It is in very good, clean condition and appears to be entirely original, save for the strings. This example uses the CBS style ‘F’ logo, four bolt neck plate with no micro-tilt mechanism.
The Antigua finish was originally used on only a few guitars from the late 1960’s, and first on the Coronado model. Unfortunately, on one Coronado run the binding burned the body edges. To avoid trashing them, a new finish was applied with a yellowish center and dark edges. While it has never been an extremely popular finish, it’s certainly eye-catching!
There is very little wear of any kind on this Fender Antigua Telecaster, and the finish is in good clean condition with just one small dent on the lower bass side. It plays well, and there’s no mistaking the Antigua finish!
A Fender rectangular hard shell case is included.
