Here we have a Fender 62 Jazz Bass Reissue from 1994, in the Olympic White finish. This is a Made in USA model featuring early style concentric controls!
The 62 Fender Jazz Bass reissue draws closely from the initial 1960 to 1962 Jazz Bass models. The Jazz Bass was Leo Fender’s second distinct bass model after the two iterations of the seminal Precision Bass. Seeking to capture the remaining jazz bassists still using acoustic basses, this model featured a narrower neck for fast playing, and new single coil pickups with a punchier, more focused tone. As with other Fender attempts to capture the jazz market, the Jazz Bass was also picked up by Rock and Blues players, and appeared on many hit records by bands like Rush and Led Zeppelin.
For these initial models, both pickups received individual volume and tone controls by way of concentric pots and knobs. Later in 1962 and ever since (except for reissues like this), the control layout shifted to three knobs, two volumes and one master tone. The basic construction has been the same Fender Formula throughout – an Ash or Alder body with a bolt on Maple neck, and an Indian Rosewood fingerboard. In keeping with the 62 theme, the fingerboard is of the flat-bottomed ‘Slab’ type. You may notice a strip of copper running from the bridge pickup to the bridge. This strip is the bridge ground; at this time, Fender hadn’t quite sorted out grounding the bridge with a wire through a channel. It was easy to run the copper strip to a copper plate under the pickguard, which also has a layer of medium density foam to act as the pickup support.
This Fender 62 Reissue Jazz Bass is in good playing condition with light to moderate wear. The Olympic White finish has naturally yellowed over time, and while it has some oxidization is in good shape.
Sold with its original tweed covered rectangular hard shell case.
