Here is a real treat – a Fender 1953 Precision Bass, an early example of one of the most influential instruments ever built.
The revolutionary introduction of the solidbody and fretted Precision Bass allowed bassists to follow guitarists in accuracy of pitch and precision tuning, and also in the area of stage volume through amplification without feedback. Without this innovation, we probably wouldn’t have gone to arenas or festival grounds to see incredibly loud artists.
This Fender 1953 Fender Precision Bass carries its original Blonde nitrocellulose lacquer finish, with clear on the one piece Maple neck. As with many other Fender products, there’s a walnut ‘Skunk Stripe’ covering the rear-mount truss rod channel. The original pickup and bridge covers are in place. The pickup is a single coil model, predating the hum-cancelling and split pickup installed on the reworked 1954 model. The bridge, like the control plate, bears a striking resemblance to Telecaster components with two saddles each sharing two strings. The body is the original Telecaster style slab body, without the contours of the 1954 model.
This bass has a serial number of 1349 with body and neck dates of 2-9-53 and the neck is signed by Tadeo Gomez, whose name also appears on Eric Clapton’s ‘Brownie’ Stratocaster.
This bass is in exceptional condition for being 67 years old. There is some finish chipping around the edges, not surprising as the finish is quite thin and the edges have a tight radius. Fretwear is light and the neck finish is in good shape.
This Fender 1953 Precision Bass is sold with a mid-1960s hard shell case. It likely originally was purchased with a bag type case.
